What Happens if You Ignore GERD Symptoms?

It is easy to pop an antacid and call it a day (or night). The last thing you want is another heartburn ruining whatever you may be doing. However, it is vital not to constantly ignore those GERD symptoms, as they may cause further health problems.

GERDignoring

Esophagitis

This condition is known as the swelling and irritation of the esophagus. This occurs with frequent acid flowing from the stomach into the throat. The esophagus can become even more vulnerable to more harmful erosion and scarring over time. If esophagitis continues for along period of time, the scar tissue can narrow the esophagus. This is known as Esophageal Stricture. This condition makes it hard and painful to swallow. Due to the narrowing, large piece of food can get stuck, and chances of choking are increased. You may even end up loosing unnecessary weight, due to avoiding food and drinks.

Breathing difficulties

Even if you don’t suffer from asthma or lung problems, GERD can cause shortness of breath. If stomach acid is inhaled once vomited, it can make asthma worse.

Tooth decay

Acid making its way up from the stomach, into the throat and into the mouth can create a sour taste. If this happens often the acid can wear away the enamel of the tooth, causing tooth decay. The problem here is that, those who suffer from acid induced tooth erosion are unaware, until it reaches the advanced stages. In a University of Alabama study, 40% of GERD patients had substantial tooth decay, as well as 70% of those whose reflux reached the upper esophagus, compared to only 10% of those with no reflux.

Esophageal ulcers

Constant acid in the esophagus can wear away the lining, causing ulcers. If you spit up blood, or see it in your stool, you may be suffering from this. It is vital to see you doctor straight away.

Barrett’s esophagus

Ongoing, and more importantly, untreated GERD, can cause precancerous changes in cells known as Barrett’s esophagus. This condition, unfortunately, doesn’t cause any symptoms. An endoscopy is carried out to see whether or not you have this condition. A small number of people diagnosed with Barrett’s esophagus develop esophagus cancer, which is very deadly.

Esophageal Cancer

Those who suffer a serious case of GERD can develop cancer. 2010 saw 16,640 new cases of esophageal cancer in the US. Smoking, alcohol, and poor diet are all major risk factors. If you have been suffering from GERD for many years, or are over 50 and suffered for years on end, and notice you are loosing weight, it is crucial you are tested for esophageal cancer right away. Weight loss, along with trouble swallowing is a sign of this problem.
