Tips on How to Avoid Heartburn While You Hike

It’s National Take a Hike Day! A great opportunity to take on fall, and get out there and do some exercise! Hiking is a great way to be outdoors with your friends and family and get a good workout in.

If you are suffering from heartburn, plan ahead to make sure your hiking trip is a success. Follow these tips below to celebrate National Take a Hike Day to the fullest, without heartburn.

TIP 1: dress in loose and comfortable clothing, as tight clothes around your stomach can increase pressure and cause heartburn.

TIP 2: avoid eating large meals and carry small snacks with you to snack on throughout the day. Trail mixes, protein bars and even small tins of ready-to-eat tuna are all good options to snack on to prevent heartburn, and are easy and light to carry.

TIP 3: avoid caffeine and carbonated drinks on your hike, as these are well known heartburn triggers. Stick to water to prevent heartburn and dehydration.

TIP 4: carry some antacids with you, just in case you do get heartburn while on a hike. Take it slow, sip water and snack. Gentle exercise can help relieve heartburn symptoms, whereas more vigorous exercise can trigger it.
