National Refreshment Day – Which Drinks Will Ease Your Heartburn Today?

July 23rd is celebrated as National Refreshment day, held annually on every fourth Thursday in July. With summer well into play, celebrate this day with a cold and, of course, refreshing beverage.

This may be easier said than done if you suffer from acid reflux, where certain drinks such as alcohol and soda can actually trigger acid build up. Not the ideal way to celebrate!

Heartburn friendly drinks

Herbal teas: good at soothing the stomach, especially if you suffer from gas or nausea, and improve digestion. Teas such as chamomile, licorice and marshmallow are all good at soothing heartburn. According to Harvard Medical School reports, licorice is a very effective ingredient in soothing heartburn as it increases the mucus coating of the throat, helping calm the effects of stomach acid.

drinks

Non-citrus juices: alcohol and tomato based juices, as well as orange, pineapple and tangerine juices are out of the question; however, there are other juices that one can drink. Apple, aloe or carrot juices are tasty and will soothe any chances of heartburn.

drinks

Goat/Skim milk: regular fat milk, or full fat milk, has a high amount of fat, which is difficult for the body to digest. Full fat milk is known to relax the lower esophageal sphincter, which increases the chances of acid reflux. Opting for the lowest-fat milk possible is a good way to still enjoy this beverage, while preventing heartburn.

drinks

Water: the easiest of drinks to help acid reflux. Drinking 8 glasses a day is recommended. Drinking alkaline water is also a good idea to reduce acid levels in the stomach.
