Understanding Your Condition

Is Your Heartburn Actually GERD? Here's What Most Patients Don't Know.

GERD isn't just bad heartburn — it's a chronic, progressive condition caused by a weakening valve between your stomach and esophagus. That valve, called the lower esophageal sphincter, is supposed to prevent acid from backing up into the esophagus. When it fails, acid exposure begins to damage tissue. Left unmanaged, GERD can lead to serious esophageal complications including Barrett's esophagus, a precancerous condition that affects 10% of long-term GERD patients.

Most patients are surprised to learn that their symptoms — chronic cough, hoarseness, disrupted sleep, even asthma-like symptoms — can all trace back to uncontrolled acid reflux. A proper diagnosis is the first step toward a treatment plan that actually addresses the problem, not just the symptom.

Disease Progression

GERD Has 4 Stages — Which One Are You In?

From mild monthly symptoms to precancerous Barrett's esophagus, where you are in the progression determines what treatment you actually need — and whether diet changes alone are enough. Understanding your stage changes everything about your treatment conversation.

Stage 01
Mild GERD
Occasional symptoms, less than twice per week. Minimal esophageal inflammation. Lifestyle changes are often effective at this stage.
Stage 02
Moderate GERD
More frequent symptoms, some esophageal irritation. Medication provides relief but doesn't fix the underlying structural issue.
Stage 03
Severe GERD
Daily symptoms, visible esophageal damage on endoscopy. Medication dependency is common. Surgical evaluation is strongly recommended.
Stage 04
Barrett's Esophagus
Precancerous cell changes in the esophageal lining. Requires regular surveillance and a structural solution — not just symptom management.

Diet & Lifestyle

What You Eat, How You Eat, and When You Eat All Matter.

Trigger foods, portion size, and late-night eating all directly stress the lower esophageal sphincter. Small changes can meaningfully reduce symptom frequency — but for many patients at Stage 2 and beyond, diet is a management strategy, not a cure. The structural problem still exists.

A note from Dr. Darido — Diet modification is a meaningful first step, and something I discuss with every patient. But if you've been managing your diet carefully for months and still wake up with symptoms or rely on daily medication, that's your body telling you the underlying mechanism needs to be addressed. The free guide walks through how to evaluate your next steps.

Surgical Solutions

When Surgery Is the Right Answer — And What Your Options Are.

For Stage 3 and Stage 4 GERD patients, anti-reflux surgery doesn't just control symptoms — it corrects the structural problem. Dr. Darido specializes in minimally invasive techniques that have transformed outcomes for GERD patients. Most procedures are outpatient or require only a brief hospital stay.

Gold Standard
Nissen Fundoplication
Laparoscopic procedure that wraps the upper stomach around the lower esophagus to reinforce the sphincter. Long-term data shows over 90% satisfaction at 10 years.
Ideal Candidate Patients with significant reflux and a healthy esophagus.
Device-Based
LINX Procedure
A small ring of titanium beads is placed around the lower esophageal sphincter, using magnetic attraction to prevent reflux while allowing normal swallowing and eating.
Ideal Candidate Younger patients, or those preferring a reversible option.
Incisionless
TIF Surgery
Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication — performed entirely through the mouth with no external incisions. Reconstructs the anti-reflux barrier from the inside.
Ideal Candidate Stage 2–3 patients seeking a minimally invasive first surgery.
